The winter of 2003/2004 was very dry, with only one-third of the rainfall of the previous winter. The lack of water during the early growing season significantly reduced disease pressure. In July, the greatest concern was that the vines would not be able to ripen the grapes sufficiently due to the drastic water shortage.

The harvest was notable for the perfect weather conditions throughout the period. The young Port wines showed good structure, with very fresh aromas of wild berries, a consequence of the cooler than normal maturation period.
Tasting Note:
A highly concentrated wine with aromas of intense black fruit and bitter dark chocolate. It feels like a huge, unsettling wine waiting to express itself. It fills the mouth completely – almost overwhelming in its intensity. Then a selection of flavours assault the senses – bitter dark chocolate, rich, ripe black plum, cherries, blueberries and blackberry compote. The wine is chewy, fleshy and full of bite. Although it has a great structure, the balance is finely tuned and so the sensation is of a wine with enormous strength, but also great delicacy and elegance. Flavours of cassis, blackberries, liquorice and molasses entice the palate, with a finish that is delicious and pleasantly long.

Bottled in July 2006, this wine remains delightfully open, displaying floral and violet perfumes intertwined with rich layers of plum and chocolate. Although the firm structure is evident, there is more than enough fruit to balance it. A lovely combination of power and elegance.
