Washing, polishing and serving

Washing
  • Rinse in lukewarm water soon after use.
  • Use very little mild detergent and rinse well: odours affect the wine.
Polishing
  • Use a lint-free microfibre or linen cloth, ideally while the glass is still warm.
  • Hold the base of the bowl; never twist foot and bowl in opposite directions.
  • For extra shine, hold the glass over steam before polishing.
Fill level
  • Reds: up to the widest part of the bowl (about a third).
  • Whites: a little less, so they stay cool.
  • Sparkling: up to about two thirds, pouring slowly down the side.
Storage
  • Store glasses upright in an odour-free cupboard.
  • Avoid hanging them over the stove: they pick up grease and smells.

How glass shape shapes the wine

Bowl size. A wider bowl increases the wine surface exposed to air and leaves room to swirl, which helps release aromas.

Opening. When the bowl narrows towards the rim, aromas gather in the headspace and reach the nose concentrated.

Rim. A thin rim with no rolled bead lets the wine flow smoothly.

Stem. Holding the glass by the stem keeps your hand from warming the wine and leaves the bowl clear to judge colour.

Step by step

  1. 1Fill the glass with lukewarm water soon after use, before residue dries.
  2. 2Wash one glass at a time with a drop of mild detergent and a soft sponge.
  3. 3Rinse well with clean lukewarm water until no foam or smell remains.
  4. 4Let it drain upright on a clean cloth, or move straight on to polishing.
  5. !Hand wash only, one glass at a time.
