Description
San Román Prima 2022 is a prestigious Spanish red made by the renowned Bodegas y Viñedos San Román in D.O. Toro (Castilla y León). This vintage stands out as a fresher, fruitier and more approachable take on the region, without losing Toro's characteristic identity and power.
The Wine AdvocateRP 92Reviewed by: Luis Gutiérrez
The most delicate red, the 2022 Prima, is surprisingly aromatic, finely structured and very approachable. Elegant, smooth and velvety, it stands out for extraordinary drinkability within the appellation. It's made with 85% Tinta de Toro and 15% Garnacha, from destemmed grapes fermented in stainless-steel vats with indigenous yeasts. The wine aged for 12 months in barrels and foudres of different ages.
It has moderate alcohol of 14% and a pH of 3.6. 1,450,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in May 2024.
San Román is the García family's project in Toro, linked to Mauro. In recent years they've increased the share of Garnacha in their eponymous wine, contributing more finesse and aromatic depth to the blend.
The estate has 130 hectares of vines, farmed organically with some biodynamic practices, aiming to increase organic matter in the soils. According to the producers, this approach results in greater purity and expression in the wines. The estate's annual production is around 290,000 bottles.
The 2022 vintage was very dry, with only about a third of average rainfall. However, nights became cooler at the end of summer, giving gentler, slower ripening and particularly aromatic wines.
As for the estate's top wine, the 2020 vintage was marked by quite a wet spring and growing season. However, the end of the season was very hot, leading to an early harvest.
