Description
Dona Maria Amantis Reserva Tinto 2022 is a premium regional wine made by the renowned producer Júlio Bastos (Dona Maria Wines) in the Alentejo, Portugal. This blend combines Portuguese and international grapes in a balanced way.
The Wine AdvocateRP 91Reviewed by: Luis Gutiérrez
The 2022 Amantis Reserva Tinto was made from a blend of equal parts Petit Verdot, Touriga Nacional, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with neutral yeasts and aged for one year in used French oak barrels.
It shows notes of red and wild berries, a herbal component, spice and well-integrated oak. It has restrained ripeness, 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.56 and 5.6 g/L of acidity, contributing to good freshness and balance. On the palate it's juicy and pleasant, with an elegant, polished structure, and easy to drink.
20,400 bottles were produced. The wine was bottled in November 2025.
Dona Maria is the project of Júlio Bastos, who ran a former estate called Quinta do Carmo between 1986 and 2000, which from 1992 was part of a partnership with the Rothschild group. Bastos started the Dona Maria project in 2003 and is now the fourth generation of the family making wine on this property.
Today the estate has 72 hectares of vines around Estremoz, in the northern Alentejo, including five hectares of vines over 70 years old, among them plots of Alicante Bouschet of the same clone used in the first vineyard of this grape planted in Portugal, as well as five hectares planted in 2017.
The winery consists of three old buildings from the 19th century, restored in 2003. One keeps 19th-century marble lagares where the grapes are traditionally foot-trodden. There are also 18 cement vats used for ageing the reds.
The newest building houses fermentation vats for whites, reds and rosés, as well as a bottling and labelling line. Average production is about 500,000 bottles a year.
The house style is a neoclassical-inspired Alentejo, combining French and Portuguese grapes.
