What it is

Sweetness comes from the grape's natural sugar that did not turn into alcohol (residual sugar). A dry wine has almost none; a Port or a late-harvest wine has a lot.

What it is

Alcohol is made when yeast ferments the grape's sugar. It brings warmth, adds to the body and carries the aromas.

As warmth in your throat and chest when you swallow, and a slight burn on the nose when it is high.

Description

Horácio Simões Moscatel Roxo Excellent is one of the most respected and exclusive fortified wines of the Península de Setúbal, made by the prestigious Casa Agrícola Horácio Simões. It's often acclaimed by international critics, with excellent scores such as 94–95 points from Robert Parker.

The NV Excellent Moscatel de Setúbal, a wine concentrated over decades of ageing in different oak vessels, has a dark amber colour with greenish glints, 17% alcohol, a pH of 3.4 and 6.1 grams of acidity. The bottled wine comes from a selection of the best barrels, in a limited edition of 1,200 litres.

I love the intense, vibrant nose of sweet Moscatel de Setúbal wines, with notes of caramelised orange peel, acacia honey, white pepper and a minty touch. It's alcoholic and aromatic, very attractive, with a magnetism that keeps drawing me back to the glass to discover new nuances. It's thick and dense, clear and bright, sweet but not heavy. 2,000 individually numbered bottles were filled in April 2025.
