Description
MOB Lote 3 Tinto 2023 is a red from the renowned Dão region, made by the joint venture of winemakers Jorge Moreira, Francisco Olazabal and Jorge Serôdio Borges (their initials form M.O.B.).
The Wine AdvocateRP 91Reviewed by: Luis Gutiérrez
The 2023 Lote 3 Tinto, a field blend, was produced from a combination of plots planted in similar proportions with Touriga Nacional and Jaen, with around 20% Alfrocheiro, from old vineyards in Gouveia and Seia. It fermented in stainless steel vats with moderate extraction and matured for 12 months in used 225-litre French oak barrels and stainless steel.
AromaThe nose shows wild berries and herbs, with light notes of honey and beeswax, characteristics I sometimes find in young reds. The palate is juicy, fresh and full of energy, with fine-grained tannins and a texture marked by the granite soils. It has 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.8 and 5.39 g/l acidity.
It conveys the identity of the Dão in an approachable, appealing way. 50,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in July 2025.
M.O.B. stands for Moreira, Olazábal and Borges — Jorge Moreira of Poeira, Francisco "Xito" Olazábal of Quinta do Vale Meão and Jorge Borges of Pintas, all involved in Douro projects. Longtime friends, they decided to start a joint project in a different region: the Dão.
They began in 2011, almost 15 years ago. They first rented Quinta do Corujão, an estate with 11 hectares of vines in Seia, which they bought five years later. They also rent other very old vineyards in Gouveia, at around 600 metres. Today they produce around 100,000 bottles.
2022 and 2023 were quite hot years, although the vines suffered more in 2023. 2021 was an extremely balanced, cool year, as was 2024. Harvest usually takes place later, about 15 days after most producers, because the vineyards are in cooler areas.
