Description
Monte Branco Trincadeira 2022 is a prestigious single-variety red made by Adega do Monte Branco in Estremoz, Alentejo. Made by winemakers Luís Louro and Inês Capão, it stands out for exploring the solo potential of a grape that's traditionally difficult and mostly used in blends.
The Wine AdvocateRP 92Reviewed by: Luis Gutiérrez
The 2022 is a varietal wine from a grape that can give light wines and which, for the producer, is especially important in blends for freshness and balance, although it's a difficult variety to work in the vineyard.
It fermented in stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts and aged for a year in used, neutral 300-litre oak barrels, which allow it to evolve without marking the wine's profile too much.
It has notes of red cherry and aromatic herbs. It shows good ripeness and 14% alcohol, visibly riper than the 2021, but still keeping good freshness, with a pH of 3.51 and 5.3 g/l acidity. It was bottled in August 2024.
About the producer
Luis Louro is the son of Miguel Louro of Quinta do Mouro. In 2004 he founded Adega Monte Branco in Estremoz, after two years spent buying land, planting vines and buying existing plots.
He uses no herbicides and pays more and more attention to native grapes. He farms 28 hectares in five plots, all in Estremoz, the oldest planted in 1993.
His average annual production is around 200,000 bottles.
