Douro, Portugal · since 1918
Founded in 1918 by Manoel Domingues Poças Júnior, the house began by selling grape spirit to Port shippers. In 1932 it received Quinta das Quartas in settlement of a debt and started making wine. It is still run by the same family, now in its fourth generation, with three estates, one in each Douro sub-region, and 76 hectares of vines.

The Fora da Série Ânfora 2018 is an equal blend of Arinto and Códega, aged for nine months in clay amphorae. It comes in at 13.3% alcohol. Amphora wines sometimes show earthy ‘nuances’; this one, however, is quite clean, as well as solid and well structured. It's a good start for this experimental series. Serious and a little austere, it makes a convincing showing. I think it can age and improve, but there's no track record, so it's best to follow its evolution with caution. Only 600 bottles were produced.
