Description

Santa Cruz de Artazu is a high-end red made by Bodegas y Viñedos Artazu, part of the respected Artadi group, in Navarra, Spain. Made from organically farmed old Garnacha (Grenache) vines, it's widely recognised for its elegance and structure.

The 2020 Santa Cruz de Artazu red is a Garnacha from small old plots on the slopes of Artazu, mainly around the Hermitage of Santa Cruz. It was made very much in the Artadi style for reds, with open-vat fermentation and nine months in barrels, here 500-litre. It has 14.65% alcohol and very good freshness and acidity, translating into a balanced, tasty varietal red. It's clean, aromatic, open and expressive, with plenty of fruit. On the palate it's juicy and round, with abundant, fine-grained tannins. 4,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in September 2022.

The village red from Artazu, the 2023 Santa Cruz de Artazu, was made with grapes from small plots of old, bush-trained, dry-farmed vines on silt and limestone soils that bring finesse. It shows notes of red fruit and flowers, aromatic herbs and perfectly integrated oak after maturing for eight months in well-used 600-litre barrels. It's harmonious, elegant and delicately structured, with fine tannins and great balance. It's already approachable thanks to its harmonious profile, but has the structure and balance to develop very well in bottle. 6,909 bottles and 51 magnums were filled in December 2024.

Artazu is the Navarra project of Rioja's Artadi, in the village of Artazu, where they have 27 hectares of old-vine Garnacha, plus another 13 hectares in San Martín de Unx, all certified organic. They produce 45,000 bottles a year.
