Bairrada
Between the hills and the Atlantic on clay-limestone soils. Home of Baga, for firm, age-worthy reds, and some of Portugal’s finest sparkling wines.
Producer
Quinta das Bágeiras
Bairrada (Fogueira), Portugal · since 1989
Mário Sérgio founded Quinta das Bágeiras in 1989 in the village of Fogueira, bringing together the vineyards of both his grandfathers; the name came from locals, who would say 'there goes Fausto to his Quinta das Bágeiras'. With the support of his father, Abel, 12 hectares that had sold wine in bulk began producing wines under their own label, made with minimal intervention.

The freshness that makes your mouth water, like a squeeze of lemon. It gives a wine tension, length and ageing potential, and makes it great with food.

Description
The name Mário Sérgio Alves Nuno may not mean much to the unwary, but he is nothing less than the great mind behind the great wines of Quinta das Bágeiras. The story of Quinta das Bágeiras spans the work of 3 generations, yet it was only in 1989, under Mário Sérgio, that the wines began to be bottled and sold under the Quinta das Bágeiras name.
And not a moment too soon, as it quickly became a benchmark for Bairrada and for Portugal. Here, everything is done with the greatest respect for tradition and old know-how, respecting the vineyard, the grape and the wine.
The result is rewarding: genuine wines with enormous character and purity. Although made using age-old methods, Quinta das Bágeiras wines don't follow fashion; they're always in fashion.
Bright pink colour, with excellent aromatic and fruity intensity. On the palate it's very fresh, with good acidity and intensity; fruity, with good structure and volume.
