The Wine Advocate

Monica Larner: Brunello di Montalcino is the ambassador of high-quality Italian wines around the world, the first wine to receive the DOCG designation. Brunello is a bright ruby red color, tending to garnet red with age. Its bouquet is intense, pure, pleasant and refined, reminiscent of sweet violet, tobacco, chocolate and pleasant notes of wild berries and vanilla.

The Altesino 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is a particularly elegant wine, with tart fruit, clean mineral lines and a medium-bodied approach. Like other wines from this vintage, the 2018s are more approachable than, for example, the 2016s or 2013s. You can drink this wine soon or choose to cellar it for a while longer. The young tannins are almost completely accessible, and the wine finishes with dryness and plenty of freshness. This is a generous production of 120,000 bottles.

Last year I had the pleasure of participating in a very exciting vertical tasting with Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini from Altesino. I will be publishing my findings in a future issue.
