Description
Barca Velha is Portugal's most legendary still wine: it was created by Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, with the first vintage in 1952, and Casa Ferreirinha releases it only in years judged exceptional, after long ageing. It comes from the Douro Superior and is made from traditional Douro grape varieties. This 2008 vintage is one of the most coveted Portuguese bottles.
In the glass it shows a deep colour and a nose of black fruit, rockrose, violet, spice and cigar box, with the complexity that only time in bottle brings. The palate is elegant and firm, with fine tannins, fresh acidity and a long finish.
Decant an hour ahead and serve at 16–18 °C with roast kid, grilled beef, game or aged cheeses. It is one of Portugal's most coveted still wines and will keep evolving in the cellar.
