The Well: A privileged site located in Villaester and planted with old Tinta de Toro vines that are over 45 years old. We have selected a small treasure for Cartago at the highest level, at an altitude of 700 meters.
Vintage of impeccable phenolic maturity. After a dry and frost-free spring, flowering ended uniformly in June. The summer was cold until September, which was warm and calm, ensuring a harvest with excellent harmony between degree and acidity.
Viticulture: On very sandy soils with clay at about 50 cm and vineyards planted in clay, in a traditional 3x3 frame. The average yield is 2,500 kg per hectare.
Production: El Pozo was harvested on September 17th with an initial manual selection in the vineyard. After complete destemming, fermentation and maceration with native yeasts, the grapes were aged for 15 days at temperatures of up to 28ºC.
Aged for 3 months in new and used French oak barrels.
Bottling: 3,838 bottles and 201 magnums were bottled in July 2017.
The 2013 harvest, classified as very good, started in a complicated way. In the early stages of spring, in April and May, temperatures were low and there was a lot of rain, significantly delaying the start of the vegetative cycle. This produced a delay in flowering and consequently a later maturation. With all this, before the harvest, a considerable amount of water fell, which produced an interspersed harvest. After a cold and rainy year, the profile of the wines they produce is less concentrated than usual. Fresher and with good acidity.
