Description
Château L'Évangile is one of the great wines of Pomerol, with vines neighbouring Petrus and Cheval Blanc on clay and gravel over iron-rich subsoil. In the hands of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) since 1990, and wholly owned by them since 1999, it produces a Merlot and Cabernet Franc red of great opulence, depth and elegance.
In the glass it shows a deep colour and a nose of ripe black fruit, cedar, tobacco and graphite, with fine spice that gains complexity with air. The palate is structured and elegant, with firm yet polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, persistent finish.
Decant one to two hours ahead and serve at 16–18 °C with roast kid, lamb chops, dry-aged beef or hard cheeses. It is a wine built for the long haul that rewards patient cellaring.
