The Chocolate Block is a barrel-aged red wine produced in the Wine of Origin Swartland region by South African winery Boekenhoutskloof, using Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta, Cinsault, Syrah and Viognier grapes.
Boekenhoutskloof Winery has existed as an estate since 1776 in the beautiful Franschhoek Valley, but it wasn’t until 1993 that they underwent a major transformation in wine production. They focus on using high-quality French varieties and organic viticulture methods, starting in the vineyards. Under the leadership of winemaker Marc Kent, they produce wines that appeal to everyone.
The Chocolate Block comes from vines with an average age of between 5 and 40 years. These vines are planted on slate and granite soils and grow in a Mediterranean climate influenced by the ocean. Productivity ranges from 4,000 to 8,000 kilos per hectare, and the harvest is carried out at the ideal point of ripeness.
Each variety used in the production of The Chocolate Block is vinified separately. The Garnacha is fermented in 600-liter barrels, while the Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in new 2,500-liter French oak barrels for 12 months. When the wine is ready, it is clarified with egg white, lightly filtered and then bottled.
The Chocolate Block is a red wine with all the charm and personality of the wines that are being rethought by new winemakers in South Africa. An authentic Swartland personality.
