"Was it in Revista de Vinhos?" It's still one of the questions we hear most at the counter. For many people in Portugal, Revista de Vinhos is their first contact with scores and systematic tastings: an annual guide, a tasting panel, and reports on regions and producers.
At Vinogrande its presence is more selective than Wine Advocate's or Grandes Escolhas': dozens of product pages cite Revista de Vinhos in full; a shorter group carries an RV tag (RV16, RV17, RV175, RV18, RV20). Fewer tags doesn't mean less importance. It means only what the product page documents goes in.
Who they are and how they score
In the Portuguese tradition, Revista de Vinhos uses a 20-point scale. On our product pages this appears as "17 points", "18 pts", "16.5/20". There are exceptions: some pages give a score out of 100 ("93 points from Revista de Vinhos"). When the page says 93, we quote 93. When it says 17, we quote 17. We don't convert one into the other.
The internal tag RV18 means 18 points. RV175 means 17.5. The half point counts.
Why Vinogrande lists Revista de Vinhos
Because Portuguese customers ask for it by name. Because its annual guide still shapes Christmas and cellar conversations. And because our curation — renowned critics, visible sources — includes the national press, not just American magazines.
Four wines from the shop (real scores)
Kopke São Luiz Reserva Branco 2022 (Douro). On the product page: Revista de Vinhos awarded 17 points. Intense grapefruit and toast on the nose; lime, freshness and melon notes on the palate. Seventeen points, source in writing. (The product's web address ends in "2024"; the product title is the 2022 vintage — we quote the title.)
Quinta do Piloto Moscatel Roxo 10 anos (Setúbal). On the product page: 17 pts Revista de Vinhos — topaz colour, dried fig, linden and honey, a balance of sweetness and acidity.
Murganheira Velha Reserva Bruto (Távora-Varosa). On the product page: 18 pts Revista de Vinhos — citrus colour, apple, plum and caramel, a very fruity palate. A Portuguese sparkling wine at the 18-point level.
Quinta do Regueiro Alvarinho Primitivo 2024. On the product page: 93 points from Revista de Vinhos, alongside 18 out of 20 from Grandes Escolhas magazine. Here the page itself uses both scales. The shop doesn't pick one: it shows both as they are.
How to read a score before you click "buy"
- Check whether the score is out of 20 or out of 100 — a well-made product page will say.
- A Portuguese 17/20 isn't a Jancis Robinson 17 or a Parker 90. They're different systems.
