Wine Spectator editorial cover — WS initials, 100-point scale, Vinogrande

Wine Spectator: panel, tasting and WS scores at Vinogrande

2 min read Vinogrande

When you see WS93 on a Vinogrande product page, that number comes from Wine Spectator — the American wine magazine with panel tastings, reporting and the famous Top 100 ranking.

The active catalogue of our wine shop in Moledo do Minho has around one hundred and fifty wines tagged WS. This article doesn't invent scores: it explains what the panel is, how to read the 100-point scale and what difference it makes when you buy.

It isn't "better than Parker". It isn't the same as Suckling. It's a different editorial team, a different method, a different tasting date. Discerning buyers read the name before the number.

What Spectator does (and doesn't do)

Spectator holds blind panel tastings. The published score is the magazine's, often signed by a regional critic (Bruce Sanderson for Italy, James Molesworth for Bordeaux, among others). There are also the year-end lists: Cellar Selections, Top 100 — editorial distinctions, not a shop algorithm.

What the score signals: balance, definition, ability to age or to shine now, according to that panel. What it doesn't signal: fair price, universal taste, stock tomorrow.

The scale

A hundred points. In wine-shop conversation, from 90 upwards:

  • 90–94 — outstanding, in the magazine's own words.
  • 95–100 — classic. In the Vinogrande catalogue, WS95 and WS97 appear mainly on Ports, Champagnes and age-worthy reds.

A Spectator 93 for a 20-year-old Tawny doesn't compare with a Spectator 93 for a Barolo. The scale is the same; the glass isn't.

Why Vinogrande lists Spectator

Because it reaches the product pages with a source, and because international customers — and Portuguese ones who read reviews in English — already use it as a filter. Our shop in Moledo do Minho doesn't translate Spectator into "stars". It quotes the number and the publication.

Four wines from the shop (real scores)

Poças 20 Anos Tawny Porto. On the product page: 93 pts Wine Spectator — amber, dried-fruit aromas, refined and harmonious, long finish. Tag WS93.

Poças 30 Anos Tawny Porto. On the product page: 94 pts Wine Spectator, noting aromatic richness, walnuts and liqueur notes. The same page has The Wine Advocate RP 94, Mark Squires. Spectator and Advocate on the same Tawny: 94 and 94, each with its own name.

Poças 40 Anos Tawny Porto. On the product page: 95 pts Wine Spectator — amber with greenish tints, intense aromas. Tag WS95. Three Tawnies from the same house, three different Spectator scores: 93, 94, 95. The age on the label isn't the score; the magazine scored each one.

Álvaro Palacios Camins del Priorat Tinto 2021. On the product page: Wine Spectator awarded 92 points to this take on Priorat. Tag WS92. A table red, not a Port — so you don't come away thinking Spectator at Vinogrande means only Tawny.

How to read a score before you click "buy"

  1. WS and the number: which wine, which year (for a non-vintage Tawny, the bottling release matters).
  2. Who signed it in the magazine, if the product page says (Sanderson, Molesworth, etc.).
  3. Free shipping in mainland Portugal on orders over €80.

Stock changes. The scores in this article were copied from the product pages on vinogrande.pt at the time of writing — not rounded, not invented. If the product page and this text differ, the product page applies.
