Description

Confuron-Cotétidot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut St Jacques 2019 is a red Burgundy, France, made from Pinot Noir. It's known for its "old school" style, with a robust structure and excellent ageing potential.

The Confuron family has been growing vines since the 17th century, during the reign of Louis XIV. Its speciality was, and still is, the selection and propagation of vines. They led the way in identifying the best massal selections and even have a clone of noble Pinot Noir named after them: Pinot Confuron. The family makes single village wines in four Côte de Nuits villages (Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin, not to mention Pommard) and owns an impressive range of premier and grand cru parcels, including the famous Vosne Suchots (of which they're one of the largest owners), Échezeaux, Clos Vougeot and small parcels of Charmes-Chambertin and Mazis-Chambertin. Today Yves Confuron runs the estate with help from his winemaker brother Jack in the cellar. Their parents, Jacky and Bernadette, work in the vineyards as they have diligently done for more than fifty years. The vines, averaging 65 years old, have never been treated with synthetic herbicides or pesticides, and great care is taken to keep yields low through regular ploughing, short pruning and green harvesting in spring. At harvest, sorting is done both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The grapes are always picked late to ensure ripe stems. Yves follows the family tradition of 100% whole-bunch fermentation, followed by long cuvaisons of two to three weeks and extended barrel ageing for up to two years. Village wines tend to see 10–20% new oak, a little more for the 1er Crus, and up to a maximum of 50% for the Grands Crus. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered, and show remarkable aromatic intensity, spice, purity of fruit and impressive minerality from their fantastic terroirs.
