Description
After working in Priorat for Daphne Glorian (Clos Erasmus) and Álvaro Palacios, and spending some years in France, in Burgundy (at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Comte Armand) and in the northern Rhône at Domaine Combier, Verónica Ortega returned to Spain to start her own project, in the Bierzo region.
In some places, such as Bierzo, old vines have been preserved, and Mencía is one of this Cádiz-born winemaker's favourite grapes. Her first steps towards a great project were taken in this part of León, building on Verónica's wide experience.
Her wines are artisanal, with spontaneous fermentations and low sulphur. The vineyard is worked by hand following organic principles. The plots are mostly old Mencía vines but, as is common in Bierzo, there is a very small proportion of local varieties, both white and red, interplanted in the vineyard: Alicante Bouchet, Merenzao, Jerez.
