Description

Yoichi was Nikka’s first distillery, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru on the island of Hokkaido by the sea, in a climate that reminded him of Scotland. It is one of the few distilleries in the world that still heat their stills directly with coal, giving a robust, oily spirit with peat smoke.

Matured in American oak, sherry casks and new charred American oak and bottled at 45%, it shows peat smoke, sea salt, plum and vanilla on the nose. The palate is oily and full-bodied, with peat smoke, red berries, malted cereal and pepper. The finish is long, with peat smoke, sea salt and oak.

For lovers of smoke, it is an essential bottle. Drink it neat or with a drop of water, which reveals the sweetness hidden behind the peat. It pairs with oysters, smoked salmon, grilled meats and blue cheese.
