Description
Craigellachie, founded in 1891 in Speyside, is famous for a meaty, slightly sulphury whisky that is rare in the region. The distillery still cools its vapours in traditional worm tub condensers and uses neither caramel nor chill filtration. The 13 Year Old is the best gateway to this cult old-school style.
Matured for 13 years in refill casks, bourbon casks and sherry casks and bottled at 46%, it shows pineapple, beeswax, malted cereal and peat smoke on the nose. The palate is oily and full-bodied, with tropical fruit, honey, pepper and peat smoke. The finish is medium, with malted cereal, peat smoke and spice.
Balanced and complex, it works as well for a relaxed evening as for a special dinner. Serve neat or with a drop of water. It pairs with roast meats, mushrooms, nuts and hard cheeses.
