Artadi Viñas de Gaín 2021

Artadi Viñas de Gaín 2021 is a high-quality organic red from Rioja Alavesa, Spain. Made by the prestigious Bodegas y Viñedos Artadi, it's widely known for breaking away from Rioja's traditional classifications (such as Reserva or Gran Reserva), focusing entirely on the expression of terroir.

The entry-level red 2021 Viñas de Gaín represents the new phase of this wine, as they're raising quality and reducing volumes. Vineyards such as Villalba, San Martín, Carralaguardia, Santa Cecilia or La Laguna, previously bottled separately and sold directly to collectors at the winery, now go into this more ambitious blend; at the same time, they've stopped using other lower vineyards closer to the River Ebro, where ripeness is higher, whose wine they sell in bulk and in future may sell only as grapes.

The wine is ripe but elegant, which in my view defines the Artadi style well. This year it's very complete; it has gained complexity, finesse and character. From 2021, they also started adding 2% to 4% white Viura to all the reds.

65,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in June 2022.
