Description

MOB Tinto Garrafeira 2016 is a top red from the Dão, made by the prestigious partnership of winemakers Jorge Moreira, Francisco Olazabal and Jorge Serôdio Borges (hence MOB). From old vines planted at 550 metres at the foot of the Serra da Estrela, it stands out for its extreme elegance, mineral freshness and huge ageing potential.

Praise worthy of this great wine! MOB Garrafeira Tinto 2016 is truly a testament to the nobility of the Dão, combining complexity, freshness and refinement. A wine that respects tradition and celebrates its terroir with unmatched sophistication.

The 2016 Garrafeira, tasted side by side with the 2017, was also made from a mix of grapes from old vines in Gouveia. It was the first edition of this wine and is the vintage currently on sale — the 2017 will be released soon — as the wine gains elegance and complexity with bottle age.

It fermented in stainless-steel tanks with gentle extraction and aged for two years in used 500-litre barrels. It has a complex, nuanced nose of wild berries, pine needles and black pepper. It has 13% alcohol, lower than the 2017, with a pH of 3.69 and 5.16 g/L of acidity.

From a cooler year, it shows excellent balance, elegant and polished, with velvety, perfectly integrated tannins. 2,800 bottles were produced. The wine was bottled in June 2019.

M.O.B. stands for Moreira, Olazábal and Borges, that is, Jorge Moreira of Poeira, Francisco “Xito” Olazábal of Quinta do Vale Meão and Jorge Borges of Pintas — all Douro projects. Long-time friends, they decided to start a joint project making wines in a different region: the Dão.

The project began in 2011, almost 15 years ago. They first leased Quinta do Corujão, an estate with 11 hectares of vineyards in Seia, which they bought five years later. They also leased other very old vineyards in Gouveia, at about 600 metres. Today they make around 100,000 bottles.

2022 and 2023 were quite hot, though the vines suffered more in 2023. 2021 was a year of great balance and freshness, qualities also seen in 2024. M.O.B. usually picks late, about 15 days after most producers, because their vineyards are in cooler areas.
