Niepoort Redoma Reserva Branco 2024 is a top white from Portugal's renowned Douro region, prized for its deep mineral expression, freshness and austere profile. Crafted by iconic winemaker Dirk Niepoort, this Reserva comes from old vines (over 80 years old) planted at 600 metres on mica-schist soils.

The 2024 Redoma Reserva Branco matured exclusively in 228-litre barrels — they tried fermenting it, like the Coche, in 500-litre barrels but didn't like the result. So since 2023, both this wine and the Coche have been fermented and aged exclusively in 228-litre barrels.

They gave it a slightly longer time in oak, one year instead of the previous nine months, to improve the wine's stability, avoid fining and filtration and, above all, improve quality — certainly not to increase the influence of oak on the aromas or flavours.

I love the softer, subtler profile of this wine. It may not have the vivacity or length of the 2023, but it has a more ethereal side. It has 12.7% alcohol, a pH of 3.08 and 6.8 g/l acidity. 32,700 bottles were produced. It was bottled in November 2025.

I tasted the wines with Luis Pedro Silva, Niepoort's young winemaker in charge of the Douro wines. Most of the wines are from 2024, a less hot vintage with lots of vegetation and high yields — there was enough rain and the plants behaved as if irrigated — but the hot summer caused some stress due to the large leaf canopy and high yields. The vines struggled to ripen all the fruit and keep their leaves green.

It was a very rainy harvest, which made it long and apparently better, because alcohol did not rise and the wines kept their freshness. This was initially positive for the Douro wines but negative for Port. However, the rain reactivated the vines and allowed the grapes destined for Port to ripen too.

The 2024 still wines are low in alcohol and seem to be gaining volume and weight. The reds are very floral, perhaps not as vibrant as the 2023s, while the whites are similar to 2023, though perhaps a little rounder.

Half of the reds are from 2023, a cooler vintage than 2022 and similar to 2021. Both 2023 and 2024 are years of very approachable wines that are appealing early on.

In 2025 it rained a lot throughout the year, making vineyard work challenging. Yields were low and the grapes very concentrated. After the harvest it kept on raining non-stop, really more than was needed...

I tasted the Ports with Nick Delaforce, winemaker at Vale do Mendiz, where the Ports are made. They are releasing several vintages across various categories, but the big highlight was the new Vintage, the 2024. It is the next general declaration after 2022, as most producers did not bottle a Vintage in 2023.

Their portfolio is the opposite of most big producers: around 60% special categories and 40% entry-level wines, when it is usually the other way round. They also bottled the remaining 1976 Colheita, a truly magical wine...
