Wine profile
Description
Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5º 2020 is an emblematic red from Ribera del Duero, Spain, known for its elegance and ageing capacity. This vintage was shaped by heavy rain before harvest and the challenges of the pandemic, giving a profile described as more ethereal, flowing and elegant than in warmer years.

The 2020 Valbuena comes from a year marked by COVID-19 and lots of rain before harvest, which resulted in a more ethereal wine, with 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.9 and 4.45 grams of acidity. It was made with 97% Tinto Fino and 3% Merlot, chilled for 24 hours and then fermented with indigenous yeasts from a pied de cuve in stainless steel. It aged in barrel and oak vats in the first year and, in the second, only in oak vats of different sizes, 8,500 and 21,000 litres.
In 2020 the wine has a more delicate structure, is more flowing and only medium-bodied, perhaps due to dilution from the rain; the tannins are fine and polished, but there's less juiciness. It calls for food. With time in the glass, the wine opens up and becomes more aromatic, even seeming to gain some juiciness and change texture.
Production is 186,286 bottles, 5,673 magnums and some larger formats. It was bottled in May 2023.
I tasted the Vega Sicilia group's wines early in the year and have again included the Douro (Duero) wines here for context. At Vega Sicilia they're increasing capacity in large oak vats, which are used in the first year of the wines' ageing. 2020 was a challenging year, with rain just before and during harvest, while 2015 was a warm, ripe year. The non-vintage blend was made from 2011, 2012 and 2013 wines and showed exceptionally well. They make between 240,000 and 325,000 bottles.

The team at James Suckling, through critic Zekun Shuai, awarded Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5º 2020 96 points, praising its precision, elegance and extraordinary balance.
In the tasting note, Shuai says Valbuena 5º is no longer seen as the "baby" of the legendary Único but takes on the role of a true "younger brother", sharing much of its identity, though with slightly less depth and a more approachable tannic structure.
The wine shows an extremely perfumed, seductive aromatic profile, with notes of violets and wild flowers, alongside an intense expression of black and blue fruit such as blueberries and blackberries.
On the palate it's medium- to full-bodied, more open and linear than Único, but without losing complexity. Nuances of iron, cedar, minerality and cocoa powder stand out, supported by perfectly integrated, finely chiselled tannins that give texture, elegance and a remarkable sense of harmony.
The finish is exceptionally long and persistent, confirming the class and potential of this Valbuena 5º. Although it already offers an excellent tasting experience, James Suckling believes the wine will reach an even higher level after four to five more years in bottle, recommending it ideally from 2027, with ageing capacity for many years.
