Almanua 2024: The Long-Awaited Debut of Manuel and Luís Cerdeira

2 min read Malik Ali

It was one of the most eagerly awaited stories in Portuguese wine. What was Luís Cerdeira up to now? With his son Manuel, he is once again exploring "the versatility of Alvarinho", but going further.

Almanua 2024 is the long-awaited debut of Manuel and Luís Cerdeira under their own name. This milestone marks not only a new stage in the lives of the two producers but also a return to their roots with an innovative approach focused on the versatility and potential of Portuguese grapes, especially Alvarinho.

A Story of Tradition and Reinvention

Luís Cerdeira, a name inseparable from the success of Soalheiro, surprised the industry by announcing his departure from the iconic brand. With this change came Almanua, a project that unites generations: Luís joins his son Manuel in a new wine adventure that promises to push the boundaries of the familiar.

Almanua Branco 2024 is the first chapter of this story. Made mostly from Alvarinho, it reflects the rich terroir of Famalicão, where the Atlantic influence shows with clarity and character.

Winemaking: Balancing Tradition and Modernity

Almanua Branco 2024 is made through a carefully considered winemaking process. Luís and Manuel opted for a combination of stainless steel and wood, using barrels specially designed for Vinevinu. These barrels, combining French oak and Portuguese chestnut, were chosen to give an elegant structure without the wood overpowering the wine's natural aromas.

This technical approach exemplifies the balance between tradition and modernity at the heart of the producers' vision: preserving the purity of the fruit while exploring new ways for the grapes to express themselves.

A Singular Blend

Almanua Branco 2024 celebrates the diversity of Portuguese grapes, a harmonious blend full of identity. It includes:

  • Alvarinho: responsible for the floral and citrus notes, together with the striking minerality that defines the wine.
  • Maria Gomes (the name they prefer to the more common Fernão Pires): adds structure and complexity.
  • Arinto: brings vibrant freshness and acidity that balances and supports the wine.

The result is a versatile, food-friendly white, perfect with fish, seafood or white meat. Its acidity and tension make it ideal for bolder pairings.

A New Benchmark for Portuguese Wine

More than a wine, Almanua Branco 2024 is a manifesto of Manuel and Luís Cerdeira's vision. It stands for balance, innovation and deep respect for Portugal's wine heritage. With a contemporary, distinctive approach, this white is a real calling card for restaurants and looks set to become a regular on the most discerning tables.

Final Note: Almanua 2024 isn't just a debut; it's the start of a new era for the Cerdeiras, where tradition and modernity meet to create wines that move and surprise.
