Áster Crianza 2021: A Gem from Ribera del Duero - Vinogrande

Áster Crianza 2021: A Gem from Ribera del Duero

1 min read Paulo Castro

Áster Crianza 2021 is a wine that reflects the excellence and care of winemaking in Ribera del Duero. Made by the prestigious Bodegas Áster, part of the La Rioja Alta SA group, it is the result of an ongoing dedication to selecting high-quality terroirs and respecting winegrowing traditions.

Origin and Terroir

Áster Crianza 2021 is made exclusively from Tinto del País (known as Tempranillo in other regions), grown in vineyards at 780 metres above sea level. This altitude provides an ideal climate for ripening, balancing warm days and cool nights. The predominantly clay and limestone soils are essential, giving the wine a robust structure and unique minerality.

Artisanal Production

Every step of production is carried out with precision and attention to detail. Hand-harvesting ensures that only the best grapes are picked. These are then rigorously sorted in the winery before fermentation begins.

The wine ferments and macerates for 15 days, allowing ideal extraction of colour, tannins and aromas. Malolactic fermentation follows in French oak barrels, softening the acidity and adding complexity. Finally, Áster Crianza is aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 75% new and 25% two years old. This gives the wine elegance, subtle spice and a structure that will age gracefully.

The History of Bodegas Áster

The story of Bodegas Áster goes back to the late 1980s, when the La Rioja Alta SA group began an exhaustive study to find the best land in the emerging Ribera del Duero region. In 1993 they bought old vineyards and began new plantings, building the project that produced the first Áster in 2000. Since then, the brand has been synonymous with quality and innovation, staying true to the authenticity of its terroir.

Tasting Notes

Áster Crianza 2021 has a sophisticated aromatic profile, with notes of ripe red fruit, sweet spice and a subtle touch of vanilla and toasted oak. On the palate it stands out for its balanced structure, silky tannins and vibrant acidity that lengthens the finish. A versatile wine, ideal with roast meat, game or cured cheeses.

Conclusion

Áster Crianza 2021 is more than a wine; it expresses Bodegas Áster's commitment to making high-quality wines that honour the tradition and terroir of Ribera del Duero. A true treasure for wine lovers that is sure to delight connoisseurs and the curious alike.
