The Journey of Joaquim Costa Vargas: Among Vines and Traditions

1 min read Paulo Castro

Located between Cuba and Alvito, in the Vidigueira demarcated region, Herdade das Assentes de Baixo is the home of the remarkable wines made by Joaquim Costa Vargas. This farming project isn't limited to winegrowing: it also includes extensive rearing of sheep, cattle and black pigs.

The Vineyard and Winemaking

Vines take up a significant part of the property, around 18 hectares, with red varieties covering 80% of the area. Here you'll find the regional grapes Trincadeira and Aragonês, as well as varieties such as Trincadeirta, Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet and Syrah. Among the whites, Antão Vaz leads, complemented by Roupeiro.

In the vineyard, quality comes before quantity, resulting in excellent grapes. Harvesting is by hand, using 12 kg crates to keep the grapes intact until they reach the winery.

In the winery, traditional methods are combined with modern techniques, producing smooth reds with balanced acidity and fruity notes of red berries, jam and spice. The whites are citrus-coloured and fresh, with good acidity and tropical notes.

A Commitment to Sustainability

As well as excellent winemaking, Herdade das Assentes de Baixo stands out for its commitment to sustainable farming. The vineyard takes part in an environmentally friendly farming programme, using gentler agrochemicals instead of more harmful products, preserving biodiversity and soil quality.

Sátiros Clandestino Wines

The Sátiros Clandestino white and red wines are true expressions of this unique terroir, reflecting not only the dedication and care in the vineyard but also a passion for making authentic, distinctive wines from Vidigueira. They are a tribute to the Alentejo's rich winemaking heritage, bringing wine lovers the true essence of a place shaped by sun and tradition.
