Oxer Bastegieta and His Wines: A Journey of Singularity and Passion in Rioja Alavesa

Oxer Bastegieta, a relatively new name on the Rioja Alavesa wine scene, quickly made a name for himself with his unique vision and deep dedication to the art of viticulture. Born with an unwavering desire to create wines in this distinctive region, Oxer moved to Laguardia in 2005, attracted by the uniqueness of the vineyards and the potential that this land promised. It was in 2009 that he produced his first harvest, using grapes from old vines purchased from local winegrowers. The result was a resounding success, solidifying his passion for the region and confirming his decision to settle there permanently.

From the very beginning, Oxer has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the quality and authenticity of his wines. Convinced of the importance of old vines, he decided to invest every penny in acquiring ancient land, true wine-growing treasures. Among his most precious acquisitions is the Artillero vineyard, located in Elvillar, at an altitude of 600 metres, which is an impressive 98 years old. It is from this vineyard that the white Iraun and the red Artillero are born, two wines that exemplify the best of Rioja Alavesa. However, for Oxer, this is just the first stage of an ongoing journey in search of ancient vines, which he believes hold the key to the immortality of his wines.

Oxer’s winemaking philosophy is deeply rooted in respect for the land and tradition. The vineyards are farmed organically, following regenerative farming principles. Human intervention is kept to a minimum, favouring natural and sustainable methods. The work in the vineyards is carried out with an almost artisanal delicacy, using men and mules to preserve the integrity of the old vines. In the cellar, Oxer maintains this minimalist approach, avoiding excessive intervention. Fermentation is spontaneous, with minimal extraction to ensure the wines preserve their purity and freshness. 400-600 litre barrels, foudres, stoneware pots and concrete tanks are used for ageing, contributing to the complexity and longevity of the wines.

The result of this meticulous work are wines that stand out for their elegance, freshness and refinement. These are the characteristics that Oxer pursues with tireless passion, always with the aim of creating wines that are not only a pleasure to drink, but that also have the potential to age gracefully over time. Every detail, from the name to the labeling of the wines, is carefully thought out to reflect Oxer’s universe and the deep connection he feels with his vineyards and his land.

When tasting a wine from Oxer Bastegieta, the wine lover is transported to the essence of Rioja Alavesa, to the ancient vines that have stood the test of time for almost a century, and to the passion of a man who dedicates his life to creating wines that are, in his own words, “to drink and to keep”. With a quote from the Persian poet Omar Khayyam, “All human wisdom by the sweet aroma of wine”, Oxer encapsulates the philosophy that guides each bottle he produces. His wines are more than just drinks; they are an expression of the soul of the land, captured and preserved for future generations.
