Oxer Bastegieta and His Wines: A Journey of Singularity and Passion in Rioja Alavesa

2 min read Paulo Castro

Oxer Bastegieta, a relatively new name on the Rioja Alavesa wine scene, quickly stood out for his unique vision and deep dedication to the art of winegrowing. Driven by an unshakeable desire to make wine in this distinctive region, Oxer moved to Laguardia in 2005, drawn by the uniqueness of its vineyards and the potential the land promised. In 2009 he made his first vintage, using grapes from old vines bought from local growers. The result was a resounding success, cementing his passion for the region and confirming his decision to settle there for good.

From the start, Oxer showed an unwavering commitment to the quality and authenticity of his wines. Convinced of the importance of old vines, he decided to invest every cent in acquiring old plots, true viticultural treasures. Among his most precious acquisitions is the Artillero vineyard in Elvillar, at 600 metres and an impressive 98 years old. This vineyard gives the white Iraun and the red Artillero, two wines that exemplify the very best of Rioja Alavesa. For Oxer, however, this is just the first step in an ongoing search for old vines, which he believes are the key to making his wines immortal.

Oxer's winemaking philosophy is deeply rooted in respect for the land and tradition. His vineyards are farmed organically, following regenerative agriculture principles. Human intervention is minimal, favouring natural, sustainable methods. Work in the vineyards is done with almost artisanal care, using people and mules to preserve the integrity of the old vines. In the winery, Oxer keeps the same minimalist approach, avoiding excessive intervention. Fermentation is spontaneous, with minimal extraction so the wines keep their purity and freshness. Barrels of 400 to 600 litres, foudres, stoneware jars and concrete tanks are used for ageing, adding to the wines' complexity and longevity.

The result of this meticulous work is wines that stand out for their elegance, freshness and finesse. These are the qualities Oxer pursues with tireless passion, always aiming to make wines that are not only a pleasure to drink but can also age gracefully over time. Every detail, from the names to the labels, is carefully thought out to reflect Oxer's world and his deep connection with his vines and his land.

Tasting a wine by Oxer Bastegieta takes you to the essence of Rioja Alavesa, to old vines that have withstood almost a century, and to the passion of a man who devotes his life to making wines that are, in his own words, "for drinking and for keeping". With a quote from the Persian poet Omar Khayyam, "All human wisdom for the gentle aroma of wine", Oxer sums up the philosophy behind every bottle he makes. His wines are more than mere drinks; they are an expression of the soul of the land, captured and preserved for future generations.
