Wine and Portuguese Christmas Food: An Extraordinary Pairing - Vinogrande

Wine and Portuguese Christmas Food: An Extraordinary Pairing

2 min read Paulo Castro

Christmas in Portugal is a celebration of unmistakable traditions and flavours. Tables laden with traditional dishes make for a unique food experience, and choosing the right wines is essential to lift it further. On the Vinogrande Blog we reveal the perfect pairings for the main dishes and signature desserts of the festive season.

Boiled Octopus

Polvo Cozido (boiled octopus) with potatoes and cabbage is a Christmas speciality in Trás-os-Montes, the Douro and the Minho. The richness of the dish calls for a white wine that complements its complexity. We recommend Cottas Garrafeira Branco 2020, a remarkable example from the Douro.

This wine is a citrus-straw colour with an expressive aromatic range. On the nose, fresh notes of citrus fruit, orange blossom and a mineral touch. On the palate, its excellent structure and balance, with vibrant acidity, match the flavour of the octopus perfectly. A magnificent expression of the Douro's potential for top whites.

For those who enjoy a very elegant red, Titular Reserva Tinto 2018 is an exceptional choice. Deep ruby in colour, it reveals a complex aroma of red and black fruit, enriched by the floral character of Touriga Nacional. Balanced tannins and an elegant finish round off the experience.

Bacalhau

Bacalhau (salt cod), found on tables from north to south, calls for full-bodied yet fresh whites. Arinto, grown right across the country, is an ideal partner, as is the unique Encruzado from the Dão.

For those who dare to enjoy bacalhau with red, we suggest exploring the aromas and flavours of Torre de Aguiã Vinho Verde Tinto. Clear in appearance with a vinous aroma, this full-bodied, harmonious wine is a surprising alternative.

Another option is MOB Senna Tinto 2019, a deeply coloured wine with a fresh, fruity aroma. Firm but ripe tannins give a precise, delicate experience.

Turkey

Stuffed, oven-roasted turkey is the star in the south of Portugal. To go with this juicy meat, we suggest a wine with character such as a Touriga Nacional from Beira Interior or a Syrah from Tejo or the Algarve.

If you prefer a robust red, Quinta do Couquinho Unius Reserva 2020 is a sublime choice. Deep purple, with floral aromas and fruit notes, it has a generous structure, persistent tannins and an elegant finish.

Another standout option is Garmón Ribera del Duero 2019, a single-varietal Tempranillo aged with precision in French oak. Elegant, structured and age-worthy, it's an exciting addition to the Christmas menu.

Desserts

Portuguese Christmas desserts are a true celebration of sweetness and tradition. To pair with these treats, we've chosen wines that lift every sweet to an extraordinary level.

Nuts and Bolo Rei: Pair with the delicate Champagne Jacques Lassaigne Reserve Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs. With aromas of white fruit, citrus and a slightly bitter finish, this sparkling wine is the perfect choice to bring out the flavours of nuts and Bolo Rei.

Rabanadas and Aletria: The classic Vinho do Porto Tawny Kopke 10 Anos is a sophisticated option. Amber in colour with spicy aromas, this elegant, complex Port complements the sweetness of rabanadas and aletria sublimely.

Pão de Ló and Queijo da Serra: Finish the meal with the imposing Vinho do Porto Vista Alegre Vintage 2020. From Quinta da Vista Alegre, this wine of great ageing potential stands out for its complexity, a perfect match for Pão de Ló and Queijo da Serra.

Steeped in Portuguese culinary tradition, this selection of wines aims to enhance every moment at the table, creating a truly memorable Christmas food experience.
