Wine of the Week: Les Terrasses 2021

1 min read Paulo Castro

In this edition of Wine of the Week, we're delighted to feature a wine that not only delights connoisseurs but also marks a milestone in Priorat winegrowing: Les Terrasses 2021. We chose it as our "Wine of the Week" for its exceptional quality, which reflects the dedication and passion of winemaker Álvaro Palacios. It is a true expression of Priorat's unique terroir, offering a sensory experience that captures the essence of the region.

Vineyards and Terroir

Les Terrasses 2021 comes from Priorat's steep slate (llicorella) slopes, where the specific terroir gives the wine unique characteristics. The vines grow at varying altitudes, bringing a complexity and structure that are hard to replicate. This distinctive terroir, combined with the region's Mediterranean climate, produces high-quality grapes that express the true essence of Priorat.

Winemaking and Winemaker

Álvaro Palacios, a world-renowned name in winemaking, is the craftsman behind Les Terrasses. With a philosophy that emphasises respect for terroir and a minimalist approach in the winery, Palacios gets the very best from his grapes. The wine is aged for 12 months in oak barrels, giving it remarkable elegance and depth. His approach reflects a harmony between tradition and innovation, resulting in wines that are both expressive and balanced.

Tasting Notes

In the glass, Les Terrasses 2021 has an intense picota-cherry colour. The nose is clean, intense and complex, with fruity and floral notes including lilac and violet. On the palate it is graceful and harmonious, with good depth and juicy cherry and forest-fruit flavours balanced by refreshing acidity and soft tannins. Thick legs in the glass hint at its rich, velvety texture.

Reviews and Awards

Les Terrasses 2021 has caught the attention of critics and wine lovers around the world, earning outstanding scores: 96 points from Robert Parker and 93 points from James Suckling. These scores reflect the recognition of this wine's exceptional quality by world-renowned critics. Although it is third in Álvaro Palacios' hierarchy of wines, it leads in sales volume and is acclaimed internationally for its excellence.

Conclusion

Álvaro Palacios' Les Terrasses 2021 is more than just a wine; it's a celebration of Priorat's unique terroir and of the passion and art of winemaking. It not only reflects the soul of the region but also sets a standard of excellence that inspires winemakers and wine lovers alike. In choosing Les Terrasses 2021 as our Wine of the Week, we celebrate not only its exceptional quality and complexity but also the innovation and tradition that define Priorat.
