When you see RP94 on a Vinogrande product page, that number comes from the Wine Advocate — the publication Robert Parker made famous. On its own, the number says little. With the name of the publication (and the critic), it helps you choose.
Vinogrande is a wine shop in Moledo do Minho. The active catalogue has more than five hundred wines tagged RP (from RP90 to RP100). Here we explain who gives the scores, how to read the scale, and show four wines from the shop with the score exactly as it appears on the product page — copied, not invented.
Who it is (and who tastes Portugal)
Robert Parker popularised wine criticism on a 100-point scale. The publication's brand is The Wine Advocate. Parker no longer covers the Iberian Peninsula. In Spain and Portugal, the reviews the shop quotes are almost always by Luis Gutiérrez (also spelled Luiz Gutiérrez on product pages) or Mark Squires.
So the counter question "does it have Parker points?" calls for precision. Often the number is Wine Advocate; the palate is Gutiérrez. It's worth reading the full name on the product page — not just the brand.
How the scale works
The Wine Advocate uses 50–100, read in practice from 80 upwards. In shop terms:
- 90–94 — outstanding, well-defined wine with a sense of origin.
- 95–97 — excellence of vintage or terroir.
- 98–100 — rare; at Vinogrande it appears on few tags (RP100 on four products in the active catalogue).
A Gutiérrez 90 isn't a Revista de Vinhos 90 or a Grandes Escolhas 18. Each system has its own palate and calendar. The shop doesn't convert scales.
Some scores carry a "+" (91+, 94+): the critic left the door open to revising upwards. We quote the sign when the product page shows it.
Why Vinogrande lists the Wine Advocate
Because customers already ask. Because producers print it on back labels. And because the house curation — wines with 90 or more points from renowned critics — needs a source, not a slogan. No source, no number in the shop's text.
Four wines from the shop (real scores)
Passagem Reserva Tinto 2023 (Douro). On the product page: The Wine Advocate RP 91, reviewed by Luis Gutiérrez. A Douro blend, with the score written next to the critic's name — the format the shop prefers.
Poeira Branco 2023 (Douro). On the product page: The Wine Advocate RP 92, Luis Gutiérrez. A white with the estate's name on the label and the source in the text. Shop tag: RP92.
Dona Maria Grande Reserva 2019 (Alentejo). On the product page: The Wine Advocate RP 93, Luis Gutiérrez. An Alentejo Grande Reserva where the 93 doesn't float free: it has a publication and a critic.
Pó de Poeira Branco 2023 (Douro). On the product page: The Wine Advocate RP 90, Luis Gutiérrez — the house's entry-level white, with 90 points and the name of the taster.
If you'd like a Port with the same source: Poças 30 Anos Tawny has The Wine Advocate RP 94, Mark Squires, plus 94 pts Wine Spectator on the same page. Two sources, two numbers, zero conversion.
How to read a score before you click "buy"
- Who gave it? Wine Advocate, Gutiérrez or Squires — the full name.
- Which vintage? A 2017 score on a red that has already evolved may be history, not a guide for tonight's dinner.
- Does it reach €80? The free shipping threshold for mainland Portugal.
