Description

Quinta de La Rosa Porto Tawny 20 Anos (500 ml) is a generous, complex and refined Port from Portugal's prestigious Douro region. True to the producer's "house style", this blend stands out for being slightly drier and balanced, avoiding the excessive or cloying sweetness sometimes associated with Port.

The NV 20 Year Old Tawny was bottled in 2016, in a 500 ml bottle with a bar-top cork and 105 grams of sugar. Compared with the 10 Year Old in this issue, it has more depth, though it still shows a lighter profile for a 20 Year Old Tawny, favouring freshness over concentration or power.

It's a very pleasurable wine to drink, lively and stimulating, finishing with pleasant notes of caramel and sugar. It lacks, however, the vivacity and juicy energy of the 10 Year Old, so the difference between them isn't as big as it might first seem — they're simply quite different styles.

The price of these two wines also doesn't differ as much as is usual between 10 and 20 Year Old Tawnies. Given this relatively modest step up, my choice would still be the 20 Year Old.
