Quinta de La Rosa Tinto Cão 2021

Quinta de La Rosa Tinto Cão 2021 is a rare, elegant and aromatic single-variety red made in Portugal's renowned Douro region by the prestigious Quinta de la Rosa. Made entirely from the traditional Douro grape Tinto Cão, it stands out for its freshness, delicacy and unique profile.

The aromatic, delicate and elegant 2021 Tinto Cão varietal red has a very attractive, characterful nose, with notes of dried petals, wild herbs and a fresh feel reminiscent of spring morning mist. It's young, fresh and elegant, with 13.5% alcohol.

It was made with Douro Superior grapes planted 20 years ago. It aged for 18 months in used French oak barrels. Delicious! 2,600 bottles were filled in March 2024.

Quinta de la Rosa is owned by the Bergqvist family, with 62 hectares in the heart of Pinhão, where they mainly make reds and Port, though in recent years they've built a broader portfolio of whites. In 2019 they replanted 2.3 hectares of the Cerejinha vineyard with Alvarinho, Arinto and Gouveio and started making new wines from these grapes. They also bought an adjoining property in 2019, Quinta de Vedeal, with 10 hectares of red grapes.

The wines are led by Jorge Moreira of Poeira, with production of about 45,000 litres of white, 200,000 litres of red and 80,000 litres of Port.

I've also included the Passagem wines from the Douro Superior, from Quinta das Bandeiras, which they also call Quinta de Passagem.
